Vinicunca - Rainbow Mountain

We will pick you up very early in the morning at 3:30 a.m. from your hotel in the city of Cusco. Our shared transportation will take you on a scenic 3.5-hour drive through remote landscapes of wild desert vistas, snow-capped mountains, and herds of alpacas.

Upon arriving at the trailhead, you'll enjoy a hot breakfast before starting your trek from Chillihuani, located at 4,200 meters above sea level (13,900 ft). From this point, embark on a 4-hour uphill hike to the renowned Rainbow Mountain in Peru.

Throughout the journey, take in the stunning Andean scenery, including glacier peaks, the Red Valley, rocky slopes, and traditional llamas and alpacas grazing in the area. As we reach the summit, you may spot unique Andean wildlife. Vicuñas, regarded as the Andean camel, can be seen here in the wild—this is the only location in Cusco where they roam freely. Vicuñas are related to llamas and alpacas, although they are smaller and their wool is the most valuable in the world.

When we reach the top of Rainbow Mountain, you’ll have ample time to take photos and relax at high altitude while admiring the breathtaking views. You will also see the impressive Ausangate Mountain right in front of you, the highest peak in Cusco (just under 21,000 ft), which is part of the Vilcanota Mountain Range.

While exploring this incredible destination, your tour guide will share fascinating insights about how these mountains formed millions of years ago and explain the origins of their vibrant colors.

After capturing unforgettable photos and enjoying the spectacular scenery—possibly even catching sight of majestic condors—we will start our descent with a 2-hour downhill hike. Our transport will then take us to a local restaurant where you can savor a delicious hot lunch.

To finish the day, we will return to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:00 p.m., where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
